It really shouldn’t be any surprise that Stan Ktoenke has bought a stake into one of

England

’s most storied clubs.

In February, Kroenke and the Rapids formed a partnership to exchange business, commercial and marketing information with Arsenal. Now, within two months, Kroenke has purchased a partial amount of their shareholdings.

American businessmen have been making their way into the EPL for quite some time. The latest was Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. in their takeover of Liverpool.

Perhaps Americans feel that they have missed the boat in regards to the world game. Now they want to change all that.

Dynamo Looking For Finals

If the Houston Dynamo win tonight, they will be the first MLS team in seven years to make it to the CONCACAF Champions Cup Finals.

But maintaining a two-goal aggregate lead will not come easy. It was announced that admission into Hidalgo Stadium will be free tonight and the history of MLS clubs in Mexico isn't pretty.

Game will be televised at 8:30 on FSC.

D.C. United Falls 3-2 on aggregate

It was tied 1-1 at the half but as soon as the rain starting pouring down at Estadio Jalisco a chill went down everyone's spine.

Troy Perkins, who has been spectacular, had the ball slip through his hands in the early minutes of the 2nd half to ensure CD Guadalajara to the CCC Final Game.

D.C. United falls 2-1 and 3-2 overall on the aggregate.

A Must Win

Although history might be against them, D.C. United needs to win in order to advance to the CCC final.

United have spent nearly two weeks in and around Estadio Jalisco acclimating themselves for the thinner air at 5,200 ft. altitude. But more importantly, striker Luciano Emilio needs to keep his hot streakgoing and the newly acquired Fred from the Austrilian league has to contribute in order for United to pull off a win.

Competition Initiatives Set

Commissioner Don Garber and Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis held a press conference today to announce a new format that will allow more of a competitive nature in MLS.

Here is a short list:

Teams will line up alongside each other in the tunnel prior to emerging for kickoff.

As teams enter the field, led by the referees (FIFA style), a new MLS anthem will be played.

In-stadium commercial PA announcements during play will be significantly reduced.

The pattern of directional cuts, so as to assist fans and referees better view offside decisions

The four MLS teams with the best regular season records in 2007 will qualify for SuperLiga 2008.

From USA Today:

ESPN will announce today that its Thursday prime-time Major League Soccer games will have super-imposed TV graphics, like football's virtual first-down lines, to show offsides. And those MLS games will get replay and with a radar gun system — like what ESPN uses for baseball pitches — will show the speeds of kicks. The idea, ESPN producer Tim Scanlan says, is making soccer more accessible to "casual sports fans."

It's Official: Fire Sign Blanco

Finally, after nearly two months of talks, the Chicago Fire get their DP Cuauhtemoc Blanco from Copa America in the Mexican League.

Blanco is well-known for his fiery temper and his interesting celebrations. It will be even more interesting to see how his style of play will match up with the MLS style of play.

The multi-year deal is reported to be close to $2 million per year. Blanco becomes the third DP signing.

In other news:

Red Bull New York has offered a one-year deal to Chilean stand out Marcelo Salas.

Salas has played with River Plate, Lazio, and Juventus. His latest club was with Universidad de Chile where he has been mostly plagued by injury.

The forward remains one of the living legends in Chile and has a strong following there. His nickname is 'El Matador'.

Clint Mathis To New York

The Red Bulls have acquired Clint Mathis from the Colorado Rapids. Whether he'll be playing in midfield or forward has yet to be seen. However, it seems it will be a good mix for Mathis alongside Claudio Reyna and Bruce Arena.

Everyone Wants A Piece...if it's there!

Although this was unofficially announced about a month ago, it seems the Rangers of the Scottish Premier League will confirm a friendly against David Beckham and the Galaxy.

The Evening Times of the United Kingdom reported:

"Rangers will confirm within the next few days that they will face David Beckham's MLS side LA Galaxy on Wednesday, May 23 in a lucrative end of season friendly, as revealed in SportTimes a month ago."

However, David Beckham will not be playing in this game. If you remember, Beckham sustained an injury against Getafe in La Liga this season. He is not expected to return to action until June.

Previous to the Rangers game, the Galaxy will be scheduled to play Chivas USA on 5/20 and then the Rapids on 5/26. Maintaining a busy schedule is apparently one of the things the Galaxy must do if it is indeed their goal to become an internationally recognized club.

Galaxy Announce Herbalife Ltd, Will Be Jersey Sponsor

MLS Notebook has learned via the Wall Street Journal today that Herbalife, the LA-based nutrition-supplement company will pay anywhere between $3.5 million to $5 million for jersey sponsorship through 2011.

Previously, MLS Notebook reported that Herbalife advertisements were posted on the Galaxy site but nothing was confirmed until now.

Which Way: MLS Or Europe?

I realize many of you are heavily anticipating the game Sunday between the U.S. and Ecuador. The game will definitely provide a ‘World Cup Feel’ ( as posted on the USMNT website).

The big name Yanks from abroad like DeMarcus Beasley, Kasey Keller, Carlos Bocanegra and Oguchi Onyewu will be playing in their first international game since the World Cup last year. We tend to view them differently and have that special place for them just as we did for Captain America and rightfully so.

But the homegrown kids will provide as much talent and attention as their Yankee counterparts abroad and should not be overlooked.

Justin Mapp from the Chicago Fire had a great game against Denmark and is making the case for more minutes challening Beasely. He will likely start in the Guatemala match later this month.

Don't forget Brian Mullan (Houston Dynamo) or Brian Carroll (D.C. United), the other MLS midfielders besides Mapp. They are solid and full of potential because someone needs to hold it down in midfield since Captain America is gone.

Defenders Jimmy Conrad (KC Wizards) and Wade Barrett (Houston Dynamo) are great for the back. Wouldn't you love to see Conrad and Onyewu pair up and hold it down for an upcoming match if possible?

When it comes to Barrett, this is not new territory. He was called into camp for the October '05 World Cup Qualifying match versus Costa Rica. Barrett is without a doubt, one of the best U.S. MLS defenders. But look for a breakthrough soon especially if he plans on penetrating the already solid defense.

And all five forwards, by the way, are from MLS. Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas), Landon Donvan (LA Galaxy), Eddie Johnson (KC Wizards), and Taylor Twellman (NE Revolution). They can surely hold it down, although if there is one criticism, it should be that they need to score more!

Grassroots Youth

Future Beckham?

David Beckham was at the age of 14 when he signed a youth training contract with Manchester United. Other players such as Rinaldinho and Wayne Rooney have developed through similar programs at a young age. The rewards of teams having developing players are endless.

This year Major League Soccer is requiring every team to have their youth programs in place; a U-15 and U-18 squad. Only positives can come out these youth development programs as we have seen in the past and will soon see in the near future.

Having a Beckham, Rindaldinho, or Rooney come up through a clubs system is of course the ultimate goal. But it’s more than the increased transfer fees that will occur through "development costs" and waiting around for the next All-Star. Those all are great things but the investment pays off in different ways.

These initiatives will bring the culture of a club face to face with each community. Young players will be exposed to the clubs traditions, goals, and values. Long-term fans and support in the area where each club resides will inevitably grow through this and forevermore connect the club to the community.

The last breed of critics that claim soccer in America can only be played at a youth level will finally be silenced. On ESPN Radio the other day they spoke quickly about Beckham and even implied soccer being a game for 'younger kids'.

Well now, in American sports, this youth development initiative is a first and will have people turning their heads. Not baseball, football, or basketball has enacted such a comprehensive youth development program. Each youth will have a defined road to follow to become a professional player through the MLS club itself.

Red Bull New York, for example, is using a pyramid format in their current system with the first two bottom tiers being paid training programs and the two middle parts acted as the academy and reserve team. All these, of course, eventually feeding into the first team. The paid training programs or camps will cancel out the cost of the academy team. It’s basic training that leads to the player identification which will help lure back the youth who once wandered off into other sports and make soccer more relevant for them.

Building these programs in communities from the ground up will without doubt increase the teams exposure in communities and grow the fan base. Soccer, in general, has an innate ability to turn people on and become addicted to it. After all, it is the worlds game and when America's youth, the fundamental part of soccer in America, gets passionate about it and is leading the cheers at the Dynamo games then you know the system has been successful and they have captured the underlying and invisible meaning of soccer.

These are the kinds of ingredients that may allow MLS to have the edge in what is a competitive sports entertainment market in America.

MLS Advocacy

Players such as Paul Dalglish, Claudio Suarez, and former MLS standout Paco Palencia have all praised MLS for its high playing level. Add former Norwich City and now Toronto FC midfielder Carl Robinson to that list. He even has a prediction, too.

"You might be surprised in the next few weeks. I think more and more English will come over now. I've had six or seven players asking if I will put in a word for them," he told BBC Sport. Well that remains to be seen but more talent has been coming over to North America this year; Luciano Emilio and Robbie Rogers just to name a couple.

In another article written today, David Beckham reassured the media that the standards in MLS are high and coming to America is not a retirement option.

MLS has always been a competitive league at a high level, although, this might be the first time players are speaking for it and has drawn attention from the media.

Citibank A No-Go For Galaxy

Washington Post soccer columnist Steve Goff is reporting that sources have confirmed that a potential deal for the LA Galaxy jersey sponsor has not come into fruition.

Goff has reported that it the deal fell through because Chase Bank is the official MLS Sponsor. However, on the LA Galaxy website there have been HerbaLife ads stating the they are the "Official Nutrition Sponsor Of the LA Galaxy."

Yet it remains to be seen if the Galaxy or other MLS teams will be having a jersey sponsor this year.

Lonely Writer

I've been introduced to Jeff Rusnak and feel for the guy. He's been writing about soccer from all over the world except for a Florida team where he resides. Both Miami and Tampa Bay have vanished since 2001, leaving the South Florida's soccer writer since 1985 without a team to claim as his.

But with the recent MLS-Bundesliga partnership announcement taking place in Miami, it is hard not to get excited, reminisce the days of MLS in Miami, and question Commissioner Don Garber what are the chances of a return. Sun-Sentinel's, Jeff Rusnak did just that.

Red Bull New York-Without The Wings...Update

Money, Arrogance, & Clueless

On Tuesday, March 13th, MLS Notebook posted a blog in reference to Ives Garlacep's article about the losses Red Bull New York was taking.

A recent article written by ESPN SoccerNet's Kristian Dyer carries on the same theme as Ives article but with a different tune. Although Dyer did provide hard numbers regarding the old MetroStars and of the current Red Bulls and does write a decent article, he has become a victim of the public relations office in Secaucus, New Jersey and their strategy to counter apathy, negative opinions, and Ives article.

Heading the new Red Bull campaign in America is Marc de Grandpre who has no experience in MLS or the business of soccer in general. It is a pity that in such a huge market that is vital to the growth of the team and MLS , no positive gains are evident in the past year- fewer fans were recorded, sponsors have left, and the losses reached $14 million.

Simply put, the game is not fun and attractive in New York. And now to make a weak attempt at redemption is not what the fans are looking for. Red Bull is not paying attention to the grassroots and instead seeming arrogant and at the same time clueless to the fans of New York.

As the old Emerson quote goes..."Money often costs too much." And for an organization that has more than enough, I believe some investors and fans have already lost faith in Marc de Grandpre and the front office.

Cobi Jones Makes Retirement Official After End of 2007 Season

He has mentioned the retirement before with media in attendance but one of the most recognizable faces in soccer made it official today.

The 36 yr. old has been playing with the LA Galaxy since the teams inception into the league in 1996. In nine years in the league, Jones totaled 62 goals and 82 assists in the regular season, plus six goals and eleven assists in the playoffs. As of the end of the 2005 season, he is the Galaxy's all-time leader in games (254), goals, and points.

After his upcoming final season, we'd be sure to look for him in a management position somewhere in the league.

Player Revolt

New England Revolution Standout Wants Trade

Shalrie Joseph, one of the most prolific defenders in MLS, says he will demand a trade due to negotiation problems with his contract. Earlier in the month, Joseph was made Captain of the Revolution and now has announced he is relinquishing those duties.

Last year the Revolution denied an offer for Joseph from Celtic FC reportedly at a $1 million price tag. Currently, his contract stands at $167,500 with two more years to go.

Among the things Joseph wants is a three-year guranteed in his contract and team bonuses that have not been paid up.

Joseph has been an integral part of the Revolution and MLS. Last year, he was elected Most Valuable Player for the Revs and has been an All-Star the past two seasons. Not renegotiating the contract would be ill-advised since the hefty offer from Celtic FC last year and a reported promise of a pay increase before training camp this year.

Apparently contract concerns do not only lie with Joseph. "There is a lot of disenchantment on the team; I don't want to speak for all the guys, but I know I have been unhappy about my contract situation and others have been worried about theirs."

Jen Chang from ESPN.com writes an interesting blog and every soccer (football) fan should familiarize yourself with him.

In this article, Chang makes his point regarding the success of D.C. United during the offseason. Teams seem to be awaiting that marquee player including the Chicago Fire with that controversial Blanco trade.

But acquiring healthy, young talent primarily from South America is having immediate returns for D.C. United. Why aren't other teams following D.C. United? Maybe other teams just don't have enough talented scouts or they are still looking for another Beckham.

Don't worry, Chang gives a short list of players that MLS teams should get.

Another Opportunity To Grow Here...
And There!

A recent article with MLS Marketing Executive, Takehito Nakamura, states that the league is becoming more interested in bringing on Japanese players. Why, you ask?

Well, first, not only does MLS want to grow within America, it also wants to become a worldwide brand. Bringing on Japanese players will only help that specific demographic here in America while growing the league itself outside in Japan.

Second, there is quality talent. Celtic FC player Shunsuke Nakamura (who we will be seeing in the MLS All Star Game) has one of the best free kicks in the world and former superstar Hide Nakata, who played seven season in the Serie A and a year in the EPL, has only been retired for a little less than a year-not too late to bring back.

The marketing aspect in bringing Japanese talent to the MLS is not just to sell souvenirs. Simply put, it is an untapped talent pool that MLS wants to capitalize on and to grow the league at home and abroad.

D.C. Keeps Hopes Alive

Luciano Emilio has done it again with a late goal against CD Guadalajara (Chivas) to even things up in the series before a difficult match ahead. He has currently scored three goals in the last four games.

Both goals came in the 2nd half of play with the equalizer coming at the tail end of the 89th minute with a foul outside the box.

The biggest challenge comes Tuesday, April 3rd in Guadalajara.

Dynamo Take 2-0 Aggregate Lead

After a shaky start in the early stages of the game, the Dynamo eventually settled in and are heading back to Mexico with a promising lead.

Brian Ching scored the first goal of the game in the 57th minute when Paul Dalglish provided a cross to Ching that was headed into the lower right hand corner of the goal.

Houston Coach Dominic Kinnears substitution paid off quickly when Chris Wondolowski entered on for Ching and put away the second goal and securing the victory.

The return leg will be April 5th at Pachuca. FSC will televise the game at 5pm CT.

Fire's Chris Armas on a Blanco Signing:

"If we can add a top-notch player, then yes, bring him in. But should we add a player just for the sake of adding him? No," Fire midfielder Chris Armas said last month. "If you do your homework on some of these guys and you see that he's going to help, then great. You just hope the guy can be a team player."

Cuauhtemoc Blanco is a controversial player and it sounds like Armas is skeptical but trying to say all the right things. Talks seem to be going well with Blanco and could see a signing in the coming weeks.

Dismal weather which led to a power outage at Robertson Stadium has forced the game between Houston and Pachuca to be cancelled. It will be scheduled for tomorrow night and will be played earlier on FSC at 5pm CT*.

MLSnet.com is reporting Cobi Jones will hold a press conference for a major announcement. Rumours are circulating that he may be retiring. However, he did score two goals the other night in an exhibition game in Fresno and has said he will play through the 2007 season.

Red Bull New York-Without the Wings

Being in probably the largest market in the MLS, Red Bull New York has not opened its doors yet to the potential that the market holds. There are very few articles written about Red Bull New York in the New York dailies, which include the New York Times, Daily News, and the NY Post, largely because of the lack of marketing/public relations the Red Bull front office has done.

Ives Galarcep from the New Jersey Herald News is probably the only journalist in the New York metro area writing about the Red Bulls on a consistent basis. Ives article is absolutely on point regarding the front office shortcomings of the Red Bulls and I would extend those troubles to the way they have dealt with the whole market of New York.

It’s disturbing how much potential there is in the New York market. It’s not only vital to the surivival of the club but also for the league. To tap into such a huge market and to get consistent coverage in the dailies should be the goal. Sadly, there seems to be no plans for improvement.

Perhaps, this is a new challenge for the Austrian beverage maker who already has a team in Salzburg. Soccer in Salzburg was already where it needed to be and the market was already willing and able to accept it. Here, in America and New York, you have to prove yourself in this sport. This could be an existential moment for Red Bull as a club and a company. We just happen to be right in the middle of it.

MLS & Bundesliga Announce Partnership...Of the Minds

There really wasn't any rumours circulating around or any hype for the announcement that was made today. There will be no tournament and no Bundesliga versus MLS Cup. But there will be a partnership of the minds between the MLS and the German Bundesliga.

In Miami, MLS Commisioner Don Garber alongside the Bundesliga CEO and VP, announced a relationship that will allow the MLS and the Bundesliga to see through each others systems. Things such as player development, marketing, broadcasting, rules, officiating, and stadium design information will all be available to each respective league.

"We could not be more pleased by the discussions we already have had with MLS," said Bundesliga vice president Tom Bender. "They have welcomed our every inquiry and have become our trusted colleagues. Soccer is still taking off in the United States and that is exciting, but it should be noted that the Bundesliga and MLS have more in common than people might imagine. So we are eager to develop this relationship."

Soccer in America No Surprise

Shame on all of you commentators, journalists, and even fellow bloggers for not bringing these things up more often. I asked a few of my soccer colleagues if they knew the history of the San Jose Earthquakes. They simply replied, "Ya man, they used to be part of the MLS and now are seeking expansion status." NO! Organized soccer in America has history beyond the MLS, and it should be recognized. That the MLS is doing so much right now has alot to do with the history of soccer in America.

The word 'Soccer' was originally derived from 'Association Football'. Soccer coming from the root "assoc." In the early 1800's, a number of colleges in America had soccer teams and eventually in 1862 during the Civil War, the first official soccer team named the Oneidas* was formed in Boston. Today, a monument in the Boston Commons stands tall in commemoration of the Oneidas. I think I'd like to get my hands on one of their jerseys.

The first attempt to form a league in America actually dates back 22 years after the Oneidas were formed, in 1884. It was to be called the "American League of Professional Soccer" but ended in the same year it was formed. Pro-Leagues and teams, however, were formed from 1894 on with teams such as the New York Giants of the 1930's, Philadelphia Football Club of the 1920's and on through various cities in America.

The North American Soccer League (NASL) does not receive as much credibility, attention and legacy it deserves in American soccer history. The NASL touched America. Fans were running to Giants stadium to see the Cosmo's and great players from around the world were coming to America to play. The reason it failed was simply because they started their fame too quickly, expanding a little too quickly, and ultimately it became financially inviable.

But now, when you hear about the Quakes from San Jose, you have to bring up the NASL from 1974. There's a reason why people are so energetic and excited to bring them back into an American league; it just does not fall into the laps of investors one day. Just an example of how emphatic the fans and investors are in Silicon Valley about this, the Oakland A's, a Major League Baseball team, has purchased the option to bring the Quakes back.

Should it be a surprise that soccer in America is growing? Probably not. According to FIFA, America has more active soccer players than any other nation in the world at 18 million. I challenge you to find a friend of yours that didn't play on a team at one time or another. Soccer has and will continue to be a good fit for America. No other sport crosses cultural boundries and no other country has as many cultures.

*Oneidas was an old tribe indigenous of the Boston area, however, there is no information that I could find that proves they were behind the creation of the team. My personal assumption is that they named the team after the tribe.

NBC will broadcast a six-episode reality series on the Beckham family move to the States. "This show is really something different, it's pushing the boundaries and I think it's going to surprise a lot of people," Victoria Beckham told People magazine. This family just loves attention, don't they?

Introducing...The World Series of Football

This summer four teams will participate in a friendly tournament at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Chelsea, UNAM Tigres, Galaxy, and Suwon Bluewings from South Korea's K-League will contest each other between July 17 to July 21st.

Sign, Seal, & Deliver
Fred coming to MLS under D.C. United

It won't provide the same amount of attention as Beckham did but it probably should. Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva or better known as Fred will take the already skilled D.C. United to the next level in MLS and in the World.

Unfortunately, it looks unlikely that he will be able to play in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi against Chivas de Guadalajara but the contract is four seasons long. Fred is 27 years old and won the Australian leagues most valuable player last year.

The signing will take place as soon as next week after the paperwork gets filed away.

Bigapplesoccer.com is reporting that a MLS team will sign a big name soon. Here are a couple options (minus Zidane):

Known as Fred, the Melbourne Victory forward could be joining Luciano Emilio in DC.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco could be with the Chicago Fire before the week is out. Wherever he goes, it will be a love/hate relationship but fun nonetheless.

Other news:

The Columbus Crew have snagged Robbie Rogers in the lottery today.

Rogers is a U-20 U.S. National Team foward-midfielder and recently ended his tenure at Heerenveen from the Dutch league.

MLS Works Charity To Begin This Year

The NY Post today actually did some reporting on MLS-finally. After going on about Beckham's knee and how he is out for a month there was something interesting on the bottom of the article.

A short paragraph stated that this coming year a charity called MLS Works will be introduced. Commissioner Don Garber was quoted as saying he hopes it will be as popular as the NFL Charity networks.

Sounds like a fine idea. I wonder who will be partnering with the MLS for this. We'll have to wait and see.

On Sunday, March 11, FSC will broadcast a special preseason game featuring FC Dallas and the Columbus Crew.

Here are the recent acquisitions and transfers:

FC Dallas has signed Colombian-midfielder Juan Carlos Toja on loan. The 21-year-old, who played on loan with River Plate last year, is still owned by Colombian-side Independiente de Santa Fe.

Forward Conor Casey has finally signed with Toronto FC from Mainz of the German Bundesliga.

Robbie Rogers, former Maryland superstar and SC Heerenveen player will be in the MLS. Lottery for him is tomorrow and whichever team picks him up won't regret it!

GK Jon Busch who was formerly with the Crew was acquired by Toronto

Now Barca Trying To Get Into The Mix

There is something going on with MLS. Yes, it's the steady growth in tickets and fans. And yes, it does finally seem that more skilled players might be coming in then leaving. But there is an increasingly attractive quality about the league, not just only to sponsors and other players from across the world but for other clubs.

Real Madrid (Real Salt Lake) and Arsenal (Colorado) are two clubs off the top of my head that have partnerships with MLS teams. Why would an elite club form a MLS partnership?

-Growth in terms of revenue

-Increase fan base

-Stay competitive abroad in terms of revenue, fan base, and the game itself

-Spread their values and mentality that the club is so emphatic about

Personally, I don't necessarily mind these partnerships. MLS is trying to grow in America and this is a great way to spread the game. Real Salt Lake and Arsenal get to play in their sister clubs facilities and understand the intensity of the game that needs to be emanated here in America to the fans and players.

However, I do not like teams being called 'Colorado Arsenal' or 'Boston Barca'. Sooner or later these partnerships are not going to last. It is inevitable that the more MLS grows, the more money each team makes, the more these partnerships are not going to matter and other values will dominate the sister clubs values. But doesn't that make all this just so much more interesting?

A great article came out in the L.A. Times today regarding Chivas USA and how they are responding to the Beckham signing.

Both the Galaxy and Chivas play in the Home Depot Center and lately the attention has all been on the Galaxy. However, Chivas claims its more important to focus on the local and latino support in L.A. then becoming a world brand.

The article states that Chivas USA is rebranding but that isn't so. Just as Chivas de Guadalajara (who created Chivas USA) is the only team that has Mexican born players on their team, Chivas USA is building a strong tradition where Colombian, Hondurian, American, Puerto Rican players directly reflect the Southern California community. Chivas USA is simply carrying on the strong traditions of their sister club in Guadalajara.

The Beckham signing seems to have motivated Chivas USA and clarify who they are in the U.S. market. The passion the clubs officials are emanating will surely be reflected in the fans at every game.

Toronto FC Tickets Going Fast

The MLS expansion team has reportedly sold 13,500 season tickets for its first season. The clubs stadium, BMO Field, has a capacity of 20,000.

All the hype, however, does not all go to the new stadium and new team. Toronto's roster looks very strong and could be one of the most dominate teams in the league this year. Players such as midfielders Carl Robinson from Norwich City, Jim Brennan from Southampton FC, are looking for immediate success in their new homes.

And remember, Conor Casey who has played with Dortmund and FC Mainz in the Bundesliga will be taking the number one allocation spot on Toronto's roster.

These are fun and exciting times in Toronto.

IT IS FINAL! Both DC & Dynamo heading to Semi's

Dynamo played a nail-biter as they win on a 2-1 aggregate.

In the previous game, DC United beat CD Olimpia 3-2 (7-3 on aggregate) and move on as well!

DC United will play Chivas de Guadalajara and the Dynamo will face off against Pachuca in the semi-final round.

Now we can all go to sleep happy.

The CONCACAF Champions Cup quaterfinals continue tonight with DC United holding a 4-1 lead on CD Olimpia (Honduras) and the Dynamo down 1-0 after being called on a late red card versus Puntarenas (Costa Rica).

Both games are being broadcasted by Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Sports en Espanol.

MLS could be example for other sports industries

Interesting article that I must chime in on regarding jersey sponsorships for MLS teams.

Apparently Real Salt Lake is the only club that has signed a jersey sponsorship with XanGo- a bottled juice company. The deal is reportedly averaging $1 million dollars a year but it remains still well under wraps. And as all of us know, Citibank is interested in the LA Galaxy jersey.

The article states that other American sports have run into resistance when it comes to new sponsorship ideas and ways of trickling sponsors into a game and could use the MLS as some kind of standard.

But let's be honest here. All soccer teams in the world have jersey sponsors except maybe for the likes of Barcelona. Are we going to find a Barcelona team in the mix of the MLS where there are no jersey sponsorships? Or will teams find other clever ways of dealing with sponsors and not just put them on the front of the jersey?

One More Try

Again, I hear the rumblings of a San Jose club return. This time, however, I think it’s the real thing. If the MLS and the Earthquakes can agree, an announcement could come as early as this year.

The only potential problem that still remains could be that the Earthquakes might not leave San Jose State University (aka Spartan Stadium). The proposed renovation of the stadium is between 23,000-30,000 seats with the extension based on football, concerts, and of course soccer events.

This is similar to the expansion plan for a Philadelphia MLS team in which the potential team partnered up with a University or College to rebuild or promote a particular part of the school. Both Philadelphia and San Jose are dealing with a stadium on a college campus.

After almost a year, Philadelphia has been unsuccessful to get a stamp of approval from MLS. If an expansion team in the West can get an approval can one from the East?

San Jose was one of the original seven teams in the MLS (called San Jose Clash until the 2000 season) and featured such players as Jeff Agoos, young Landon Donavon, and Eric Wynalda. Now after a two-year hiatus, the owners want to make a return by renovating the old Spartan Stadium which will hold roughly 30,000 seats.

The irony remains, however, that the Earthquakes moved to Houston after the 2005 season because the team could not build a soccer specific stadium. Houston currently plays in Robertson Stadium at the University of Houston.

How MLS Is Making American Soccer

Call it outreach, or call it just darned good marketing, but American soccer is gaining momentum both in terms of talent and fan base. It is a palpable movement, especially for those of us already tuned in, and our thanks should go mostly to the folks at MLS. Gaining ground ain’t easy in a sports market saturated with coverage of every professional event possible. Not too long ago those Bass Fishing competitions were getting more air time on ESPN then MLS was. After a day out on the lake my dad was having his trout and eating it too. But, maybe working their way up from the bottom of the competition has forced MLS to seek such creative solutions as it has. And ain’t that what American-style capitalism is all about?

The fact of the matter is that MLS is winning on two fronts. On one hand they are directly participating in youth development programs; reaching potential talent at an early age and growing our domestic talent pool. On the other hand they are making American soccer more universally popular. Although, I didn’t think I’d have to bring it up, the new “Designated Player rule” – or Beckham Rule if you must- will make MLS contracts more attractive to foreign players already ripe with talent and celebrity status. And since we all love a star here, they will be treated as such. Let’s just hope they don’t all move to Los Angeles.

Call any team box office this year and you’ll find that season ticket sales are already at an all time high. Yes, this is largely because of the credibility Mr. David Beckham brings to the league, but don’t let it over shadow the efforts of MLS. They were building a loyal fan base even before Beckham. This fan base was coming largely from the Hispanic community. In fact MLS was one of the first organizations that saw potential in the growing Latino population. By 2000, a marketing plan was already under way, bringing Mexican soccer stars to play in the MLS, and strategically locating stadiums near large Hispanic communities, see: Houston, Columbus, Dallas, and Los Angeles. Those strategies are working, and the addition of Chivas USA, Hispanic Heritage Nights, and televised games on Univision is the MLS marketing department showing off.

Bringing both the American suburban soccer fan and Hispanic fan together to the games is a priority for MLS (an issue that will be addressed in a future edition of Pitch Perspective). Making soccer American will require a fan base that would reflect a cross-section demographic sample of the United States. It seems like the league already knows this and so now they are also reaching out to the inner-city fan as well with “Street Football” competitions. This style of play endorses the creativity, flexibility, and finesse that some say American soccer lacks. If the successful turnout at the New York Red Bulls Futbol De Calle event is any indicator, then us soccer fans should be pretty optimistic about the future of American soccer. Which is nice, because after all, everyone should be root, root, rooting for their home team….

CONCACAF Champions Cup Series

The Dynamo fell 1-0 to Puntarenas in the earlier game yesterday. The Dynamo will face Puntarenas again in the 2nd leg in Houston, TX.
Dynamo center back Eddie Robinson received a second yellow card in the 72nd minute and the Puntarenas goal was scored in extra time.

New acquisition Luciano Emilio from Brazil scored the go-ahead seconds before the end of the first half and the rest was history. D.C. United was victorious against CD Olimpia as they took a 4-1 goal differential into the second leg.
D.C. United will have a big advantage in the 2nd leg at JFK Stadium when they host CD Olimpia next week.

New rumours concerning new deals for MLS. Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler is reportedly talking to the Revolution while the Czech Patrik Berger is quoted as saying there is a possiblity in America but nothing yet finalized.

CitiBank & Herbalife bidding for sponsorship of LA Galaxy

Bidding is supposedly down to CitiBank and Herbalife over sponsorship for the LA Galaxy jersey.

Citibank is said to have offered $49 million for five years. If the deal gets finalized with Citibank, all that sponsorship money would be pure profit for the Galaxy.

Beckhams contract is in the range of $40-$50 million. Attendance is most likely one hundred percent for the Galaxy plus an any additional money through other marketers.

These are exciting times not only for the league but for the LA Galaxy too.

Red Bull New York: Love & Hate

There was an article today in the NY Times that caught my attention (thanks to the wonderful people at BigSoccer.com). The piece only mentions Red Bull New York maybe twice but the dominating topic is about the development and future home of the Red Bulls, Harrison, New Jersey.

Just as when Chelsea redeveloped the area around Stamford Bridge and essentially got rid of the long associated Hooligans there and made the area more deluxe, Red Bull New York faces something a bit similar.

Currently, Harrison, New Jersey is rundown by old factories and not only is the Red Bulls stadium moving in but so are condominiums and tons of retail space along the Passaic River. For a moment, this all seems pleasant. Just think that when someone goes to a soccer match to see the Red Bulls, they can see a view of the river, shop a little bit, and hit up the bars around the beautiful 25,000 seat stadium.

Well, maybe not for the people living in Harrison, New Jersey.

For those who are Barcelona fans, Manchester United fans, or Liverpool fans, there is reason to hate the Colorado Rapids.

Along with their new logo, Colorado unveiled a new partnership with Arsenal. The partnership includes exchanging coaches, training sites, and players.

It is not clear whether it is just Arsenal attempting to infiltrate the North American market or wealthy American Stan Kroeneke looking for an eventual buy.

Television Schedule for 2007 season

The television schedule for the upcoming MLS season is a positive and shows more interest in the league. Out of the 195 games this season, 113 are nationally televised while the other 82 games are televised regionally.

ABC could get a little more involved, however, this is only the becoming. More games eventually will be televsied in the future especially since the atmosphere will be better than previous years.
